Role of Passkeys / Hardware Security Keys when signing in to Apple ID on a new device after all original devices are lost
Scenario:
All previously trusted Apple devices have been lost.
The user is attempting to sign in to Apple ID on a new Apple device.
Question 1:
In this scenario, if the user cannot enter the Apple ID password,
is there any officially supported flow that allows the user,
using only a passkey or a hardware security key,
to proceed into the “Forgot Password” or “Account Recovery” process?
Question 2:
In this scenario, can a passkey or hardware security key
serve as an officially supported verification method
to recover or reset the Apple ID password,
and then continue to successfully sign in to Apple ID
on this new Apple device after the password reset?
I have not found clear documentation in Apple’s official support materials
that explains whether passkeys or hardware security keys
have these capabilities in the above scenario,
and I would appreciate official clarification.
